Site Status

Last Season Completed: 1983-1984 (working up from 1950s)

I have written this page just to give you some idea of where we are with the site and the approach.

The approach is to split the site into decades and then to start at the beginning. So, far the 1950s (starting from 1955-1956 – as no info beforehand)  and 1960s are complete – although I’m sure we will get more things to add.

I have created a very brief decade overview a lot of it from Graham French’s history article for the Hove Rec opening day – but I hope to enlist people who were around at those times so that they can give a better insight into what was going on. So far, Chris Basley, Mark Harrison, Gerry Woodage and Brian Hill have offered to contribute and Chris and Mark have also provided a plethora of artefacts for the site which we will get round to adding.

So, in addition to the decade overview, there is a page for each season and at a minimum I want to have  “Highlights” section which thus far is just me annotating changes that I can detect from the handbooks. I also reproduce the Vice President Congregation, the Officers, Committee and Sub-committees and the handbook for each season. I have also added the 1st XV fixtures (and results where I have them).

If there are any other artefacts that can be scanned then I will also scan those and include them on the pages. Also, if people provide insights, memories and the like then I will get those included somewhere.

I have now completed the 70s and started the 80s. I will move through the 90s and 00s. the 10s should be a lot simpler (as should the 00s to  a lesser extent) as these are in most people’s current memory.

After spending a LOT of time going through the handbooks  I am going to change tack a bit. I will upload the scanned in handbooks for each year and leave out the commentary. I will revisit later and pop that in but others could also do that once we have the base info scanned and in. So, if you wish to help then let me know.

You will see that I have already done things for most of the 10s including the last 2 seasons. Here the informaion is more complete and I am trying to gather the following:

• AGM (Agenda, Minutes, Papers)
• Scans (Handbook and Programmes)

Certainly, from now on we should be able to achieve this. The Playing Highlights includes input from ALL teams and if you wish to provide more info then please do. If you can supply it in a useful and usable format then I will get it loaded. I cannot, however, commit to capturing hand written items unless they are scanned.

I will include images from all sections of the Club so if you have any then please send.

I have now made contact with Jonathan Boreham – son of one of the Club founders and we hope to be able to get some of the early artefacts that his father kept and passed to him. Watch this space.
