Womens 1st XV
Dorking v Hove 3rd February 2002
Dorking 13 – 12 Hove
Reporter: Vicky Taylor (with help from Abi, Jason and Charlie!) “Playing rugby, then drinking lager with fit women in a hot tub – does life get much better than this?”
Editors Note: Abi is Abi Ledward, Charlie is Charlie Hubert and Jason is Jason Hammond (now working in Kenya – update: moved to Shetland now!). Thanks to Abi Ledward for confirmation.
OK, we could have won, but it was a bit of a nightmare, because: We were playing 12’s and Dorking had one extra person; the field was awash with sticky, disgusting mud; we decided it would be a good idea to shuffle everyone around and no one played in their real positions. Fortunately our skillful backs’ play shone through and we played some good rugby.
We were a bit slow to get started, as people settled into their new positions. Sarah Taite had her first game at Number 9. She had a great game – apart from one amusing incident, when the excitement of it all got too much for her. Someone passed her the ball, she looked round for George Hodson and then THREW THE BALL FORWARDS! Play practically stopped as Hove players all over the field collapsed with laughter. Sarah, you are going to be fined for this for ever and ever!
Landi Taylor held her own at Number 8 – a bit more pie-eating is needed for her to become a true forward (Jason wrote this bit *grin*)
Charlie Hubert and I were playing at centre, with Abi Ledward on the wing – which was quite exciting! Great linking from these three produced Hove’s first try, set up by a miss pass from Charlie to Abi. I then looped round and ran off into the distance to score, easily beating the Dorking wing for pace and skill, oh yes.
Hove’s second try came through brilliant play from Abi and Karin Orford – the two of them running off down the right wing. Karin’s run showed us all the meaning of support play, and knowing when and how to pass the ball. Abi looped and darted, leaving Dorking standing and Hove cheering. Inspirational rugby, girls!
But the best was yet to come. Dorking have enormous communal baths! There was a big hot bubble bath run for us when we finished. We all soaped each others backs and played at splashing each other to our hearts’ content, AND PJ bought us a jug of beer! Playing rugby, then drinking lager with fit women in a hot tub – does life get much better than this? There are photos – should do wonders for recruitment……So, a fun game all round – the bath was definitely a highlight. Can we play them more often?
Hove Tries: Abi Ledward, Vicky Taylor
Conversion: Karin Orford
