Season: 2018-2019

This season is pretty much complete as it was done in real time as things happened. However, as with all things there are bound to be late additions as others decide to participate.

So, if you have anything that we could use then please get in touch.

Introduction

2018-2019 is the first season where we are capturing history as it happens and so this will be a different format. I still hope to have all the end of season summaries as in recent past seasons but also much more information week by week and month by month. This, of course, depends upon you all supplying the info.

I am going to split the season by month with August having the pre-season details and April any post-season. If we do any summer programmes then we can also add those. In the same format as the years within the decade we will list most recent first. Content will be posted in the month received if it covers several months or the month to which it refers if it is only one.

The competitions were as the table below:

Playing Highlights

Senior Teams

First XV

Players used 38

Serious injuries last season and numerous injuries this season didn’t help our campaign.

Massive difference in points scored and points leaked

Front five was still very competitive with some young former colts taking to the field such as George Brown and Ollie Noel having started in the thirds this season.

With players returning and coming back from injury our First xv should be back to winning ways.

Players leaving: Pat Andrews who will be missed in our front row trio

Sandy Robertson

Second XV

This season has proven to be a tough step up to the London Zoo League, the equivalent of a two division step.

With five wins for the season, a hard learning curve for a lot of players, with the added trouble of having at one stage, just before Christmas, 18 players injured, not available or having to step up to play for the 1st team, this was pushing on a crisis stage for the 2nd team for quite a few weeks. A lot of favours and phone calls just to get a team out – so thank you for those who stepped up and turned out.

Those players that have played 2nd team this year have grown in stature and have had a big learning curve and in general learnt from this season and go forward stronger.

Some heavy defeats and some very close losses, and the 5 wins with some of the play outstanding at times but the gap between was a large one at the beginning of the season, and at the end, that gap had closed and at times a narrow loss was as gutting for me as was for the players.

Those who stepped up and played 2nd team can go forward with their heads high, and a bit shout out to the ones who stepped up and filled the 1st team gaps.

Kev Long

Third XV (Beefeaters)

Hove Beefeaters have had a cracking season scoring 1041 points in 22 games and wining Sussex 3 West. Top try scorer was our Captain centre Stuart Hathaway with a total of 30.

The reason for the success is down to players buying into the mentality of having fun and being positive. With this attitude we can mix old heads like prop Ian Stewart in 25th season at Hove with young prospects like Louis Medhusrt, a 19 year old blind side who had never play a game of rugby before October and prop Aaron Kildea in his first season of adult rugby.

All three received votes as Players’ Player, the award being won by open side Dan Pettitt, this was not Dans first season of rugby. The highlight of the season was losing the Sussex Bowl Cup Final 37-41 to Ditchling, a team two leagues higher. It was an epic game that summed up the team spirit, and what grassroots rugby is all about.

Women

This season has proven to be the best to date for the Women’s section, as not only was it the first in which we fielded 2 XV’s playing week in, week out league rugby, but for many other firsts as well.

Both XV’s did the double over Blackheath, both XV’s have fielded players who have progressed through our newly formed junior section, AND both XV’s having had players included within this season’s County set up. All this coupled with the First XV ending the season as the second best amateur side in the country, missing out narrowly on the national title to the same side that pipped them to the League title owing only to bonus points earnt. However, I feel immensely proud to announce that we finished with a better overall points difference than Thurrock, and recorded our best ever winning margin over them at home, and our narrowest losing margin away.

This season has seen our entire Women’s section play an exciting attack minded brand of rugby that saw the First XV score a minimum of two tries per outing.

Under 16s:

This has been a season of many proud moments for the U16s. Beating Horsham in the league with a try in the final 2 minutes stands out. Three points behind and the clock was ticking; we had the ball in their 22 and kept possession for phase after phase, no mistakes or panic – at last the pressure told, we went wide, scored in the corner and won the game. It was Horsham’s first defeat in the league for 3 years and the first time we had beaten them – ultimately the victory won us the league title.

Twelve months earlier as U15s we lost every league game and were relegated to Division Two, only resurrected to Division One when Crowborough pulled out. We trained in the summer, held a pre-season “boot camp” and went on an early season tour to Bath playing local teams to test ourselves. Every week, without fail, in rain and snow, we trained and learnt to play to the game plan we had chosen, and with determination and teamwork we kept improving.

We have played some beautiful open running rugby and scored some great tries – word got round and we now have many supporters – thank you! For our final league game at Brighton – a match we had to win, to win the league – our supporters turned Waterhall claret and blue and we treated them to a festival of tackling and defence, as we thrashed Brighton 0-5!

We finish the season the Sussex U16 League champions having won 6, drawn 0 and lost 0. We scored 157 points the second highest in the league and conceded only 62, the best defence and almost half the number conceded by our nearest rival. If tries are about inspiration then defence is about character and culture and it wins leagues. This season every Sussex youth league was won by the team with the best defence.

Our final match of the season was the Sussex Cup final against Horsham again, but it was one game too far for us. A Horsham team with fire in their bellies were looking for revenge; they out played us and won the day. We would have liked to have won two trophies, but if we had to choose just one the league would be it. Fittingly, post-match we were presented with the Sussex League Champions shield and Horsham collected the cup shield. The two standout teams in Sussex.

But, it’s not all been about rugby! We have socialised a lot, holding 5 team dinners and touring. Touring is in this team’s DNA and despite GCSEs this year we were determined to go, so we went early in October. Staying in the Bath City youth hostel, we watched Bath play at the Rec on Friday night, then played local teams on Saturday and Sunday. Fresh and full of energy we performed well on Saturday beating a very strong Keynsham team, but by Sunday it’s fair to say we were… er… tired, and we lost to Corsham. Those who were there know, if not, you’ll never know. Special memories shared amongst friends.

Next season we join the Colts. It’s an exciting new chance to test ourselves, to learn, to play more beautiful rugby and to continue to build the team spirit and friendships that make this team special. And, of course there will be another tour – the first Colts tour for many years – because rugby is about so much more than what happens on the pitch.

Under 15s:

We have seen our player take strides in their individual skill levels and the squad has developed well as a result.

Good results in the Bulldogs and Vipers matches this season; maintaining good squad numbers; development of both individuals, units and teams; good county representation; in addition to securing a place in the county final are all achievements of which we can all take pride. We were runners up in the U15’s League 1 final to a worthy Worthing U15’s side. These achievements have come from the contributions, commitment and efforts of every member of the U15’s squad that has driven their team mates and fellow players to strive to play better rugby. Many thanks to our U15’s coaching team for their hard works ably supplemented by guest coaches masterclasses run by Sandy Robertson, James Finlason, Pete Allen, Ryan Storer and Richard Siggs.

We are also proud that 9 of our squad: Henry Kirwan, Toby Gale, Louie Stillman, Reiss Arghiros, Isaac Sefton, Rory Morgan, Massie Campbell-Brambilla, Harry Browne and Max Dombrowe were selected to represent and play for the Sussex U15’s County side with several players narrowly missing out on a place. This brings real pride to both our squad and our club. We are very proud that every member of the squad have made a valuable contribution by playing in Vipers matches and driving their fellow team mates to attain these achievements.

Belgium End of Season Tour

We ended the season with a tour to Antwerp, Belgium where we also visited Holland and played a great match against RC Eindhoven U15/16 on Sat, 4th May winning 5-17 and then taking part in the RC Antwerp U15/16’s tournament on Sunday, 5th May where we showed a spirited team performance. We won the singing contest hands down!

We visited the Menem Gate at Ypres to pay our respects and lay a wreath in memory of the men from the Sussex Regiment.

The tour achieved our objectives to give the players a brilliant experience in the finest traditions of Hove tours and to foster a strong Hove team spirit.

Well done all on a great season!

Under 14s:

The u14s have traditionally enjoyed a good start to the season, and our hopes were again high that we would prevail in league 1 of the Waterfall Table. A win away against Bognor, although narrow, set us on the right path and we were bolstered further by an unexpected intake of boys. Shoreham Rugby’s demise in this age group resulted in a good mix of forwards and backs coming to Hove RFC, and despite some mixed performances in the run up to Christmas we survived in the top tier after phase one.

Despite the best efforts of Lead Coach Craig Cunningham however, we succumbed to a series of injuries and poor form in the group, and so bruised bones and hurting heads seemed to define our finish to the season. That said, our conscious decision to give all our players good game time in matches, regardless of standard, inevitably played a part in this. And while making us less competitive, it’s not the way that we at Hove 14s prefer to be. Involving all the boys throughout the year has enabled us to maintain a regular playing group at around 35, with a sociable and inclusive outlook on the game. Long may it continue.

Eric Morton.

Under 13s:

Another cracking year for the under 13’s. With 45 signed up members we were again able enter two competitive teams in the Sussex leagues. John Shewell and new coaching recruits Dave Owens and Toby Berryman put the lads through a fiendish pre and early season fitness programme which they embraced with admirable commitment during our newly instituted Tuesday night training sessions. We definitely saw the benefit of this during matches and the lads can expect more of the same next season!

Both the A and B squads made significant progress during the course of the season.

The Bs have gone from strength to strength and end the season by winning promotion. The highlight of their league campaign was their first overseas fixture in Guernsey where Hove came away with a resounding victory. All those who have represented the B squad this season should be proud of their commitment and the great strides they have made.

After a slow start the A’s won promotion to the top Sussex league for the second phase of league games. The game against Haywards Heath was probably the high point of the season in terms of performance level. In appalling conditions which favoured a huge Heath team the lads came together as a team superbly, tackling anything that moved and scoring four sensational tries. Sadly we could not reproduce the same intensity in the next game against Chichester who deservedly ended the season as the top team on Sussex. The Hove lads can be proud of their second place and realistically targeting number one spot next time round.

Enjoyment has always been our number one priority and the it has been a pleasure to see the boys bonding as a group and enjoying their rugby. Further challenges await in the form of Cranbrook and Medway during our mini tour of Kent at the end of the season.

Under 12s:

An influx of new players and a new coach created a much needed reinvigoration of the team and a renewed enthusiasm for the start of the 2018-19 season, which saw our entry in to the Sussex Waterfall League and adoption of a new team name: Hove Hurricanes.

We began the year in Pool E, recognising that our 28 registered players comprised a range of abilities. After an initial defeat 3-0 to Lewes, the team went on to secure victories against Crawley (11-1) and Burgess Hill (3-2) leading to a promotion to Pool D for Phase 2 of the season. A second defeat to Lewes in a very closely contested match which ended 3-2 really spurred the team on to redouble their efforts in training. Their hard work was rewarded with a 4-3 win against Horsham at home and a 4-2 win away to Bognor, the combination of which has resulted in our promotion to Pool C for the 2019-20 season.

Inevitably, we have lost a few players throughout the season to other sports and other clubs, but have been fortunate to attract at least as many new recruits. It would be good to see the squad grow sufficiently to enable the creation of a second development team that would give all players more match time. In the meantime, we will renew our efforts to secure more friendlies next season in between the competitive matches. 6

The Hurricanes ended the season on a high with 17 boys going on tour to Camber Sands to play in a tournament against Brackley, Leighton Buzzard, Old Alleynians and Saffron Walden. The boys’ team work and consistency saw them undefeated in 8 games, with 7 wins meaning they were crowned Tournament Champions.

Aside from the results, it is worth noting that several boys were completely new to rugby at the start of this season and their fantastic progression this year as well as their integration with the rest of the team has been a pleasure to watch. Furthermore, all the players progress in terms of their understanding of the game, sportsmanship and camaraderie is an absolute credit to our Head Coach, Ross Oattes, who has worked tirelessly this season supported by several parent coaches, to give the boys one of their most successful and enjoyable seasons to date.

Girls Rugby

U18 Girls

The U18 girls started the season with just 15 players in our first full season as a team so we knew that it was going to be tough! With just a handful of training sessions together, a 10s tournament was the only preparation we could manage before our first two league games, one of which was a loss and one of which was a win by a single point against another brand new team. Results were tough to come by in the 15-a-side game, including having to play three-time National Cup winners Pulborough but the team was improving noticeably with some strong showings in XRugby7s and 10-a-side formats. As players got to grips with the physicality of the game at this level (most of our players were in the youngest of the three years and therefore gave up a lot in size) the results started to improve – although we didn’t pick up any more wins over the next few months, we were scoring more and conceding fewer against teams we’d played earlier in the season, including holding Uckfield to 17-5 in December after suffering a 40+ points loss in October.

Individually, we had some good players – one of the U18s spent a lot of this season playing 1st XV rugby and we had 7 players involved in the county setup over the course of the season. Over the year, we grew to around 23/24 players with only a handful of players having played more than two seasons. By February, results were starting to get closer and closer – narrow losses against Heathfield and Guildfordians showed a glimmer of hope that wins were on their way. It wasn’t until the team went on tour to Bath that they picked up their second ever win as a team against a Somerset Barbarians team playing on the same pitch that Bristol had beaten Richmond in the Premiership the day before. The win and the togetherness that had developed on tour had a galvanising impact, and the team made it two wins in a row with a win on home soil. With two league games left to play, Hove managed a draw against Uckfield and although they lost to Pulborough, they put in a dogged defensive performance and made the National Champions work hard for their win.

With a number of players coming up to the team from this year’s U15, we’re looking at around 32 players in the squad next season. This year of rugby will have served the players well in their development with four of them now heading to the Girls Rugby Academy at Worthing College. Now that the team is established and will have a larger pool of players, we’re excited to see how well this team does. Three players made their senior debuts in the 2nds vs HOGs charity game and a clear pathway into the senior game will only help to inspire the players to keep pushing forward.

U15 Girls

This season we formed yet another new team of girls with players from last season’s U15s, players moving up from the U13s and some new players. The girls played a number of matches both home and away with varying results. Sometimes they were a bit slow to get started but always came back stronger in the second half and never failed to play some great rugby. One of the highlights for many was the tour to Bath/Bristol where they got to see a women’s Premiership game, meet some players, play 2 games and plenty of non-rugby activities as well. 8

The last few games really showed how much they had improved since the start of the season. Although they lost to both Horsham and Worthing, the coaches of both clubs complimented them on the quality of their rugby. In both these matches they played as a team with 100% commitment from every player from the start until the final whistle, exemplifying the spirit of rugby.

Congratulations to all the girls on a great season and thanks to Holly, Paul, Paul and Carl for everything they have done coaching, encouraging and supporting the team.

Sarah Rhys

U13 Girls

The team was formed entirely of new players this season after a successful summer recruitment drive, with 17 girls taking part in the first friendly matches in September against Lewes and Horsham. The season has presented a learning curve for the new team who have all improved steadily during the year – the girls have experienced matches against some very strong opposition, but have stayed positive and competitive throughout all their matches regardless of results, forging an excellent team spirit and good friendships that will stand them all in good stead as they progress next season.

Highlights of the season have been a 4-4 home draw with Lewes in the Waterfall league in November, a 5-5 away draw with Tunbridge Wells in a friendly in December – and an exciting comeback last month in a Pulborough festival match against Horsham from 5 tries to 1 down at half time to draw 6-6 with a last minute equalising try!

U11 Girls

Like the under 13s, this team was formed since the summer, with a core of between 6 – 8 players throughout the year. Due to low numbers of U11 players at other clubs, opportunities for game time against other clubs have been limited, but when they have played matches in festivals and friendlies, the girls have generally won and played strongly.

U11 training sessions have been run alongside the under 13s this year, so the girls are familiar with the current year 7 U13 players – all current U11 players will be going into year 7 (under 13s) next season.

Joe Barber

Minis

Under 11s:

We have had an unbelievable year adapting to new rules. The transition into bigger contacts has been excellent. We have been able to put out numerous teams regularly into a range of tournaments with over 40 players attending training regularly. Although the RFU guidelines state that scores are not kept and there can be no winners or losers it has been clear that as a squad we have been incredibly successful in both our attack and defensive play which was demonstrated to great effect at the all Sussex finals where the A team won 5 games and didn’t concede a try.

But rugby at this club is about more than turning up to festivals with one team and trying to win. It’s about developing players to be the best they can and play within a level playing field. That is what sets us apart. Your commitment this year and the support of your coaches has enabled you to develop into fine rugby players.

The players in the under 11’s have developed not only into great players but great ambassadors of how the game should be played. You have played great rugby but also in the best spirit of the game and demonstrated fantastic sportsmanship.

Jason King

Under 10s:

Another great year for the Hove under 10s. Tackling improved as did rucking and passing skills across the squad. Most pleasing was our ability to turn up at events with numerous players all hungry to play. Throughout March and April, on the back of a lot of winter development, we were able to put out two strong mixed squads at all events ensuring plenty of game time for all players- this is where we wanted to be in terms of having greater depth than other squads.

The relaxed, yet deceptively focussed, style of play was complimented on regularly by opposing teams on tour and at festivals and despite being classified as non-competitive events the kids gave it their all to succeed as a team. Looking forward to next season already….

John Sparks

Under 9s:

It was another big season for the under 9’s. They took the big step up to contact. We started the season more than a little nervous about how the squad would fare. How many would we lose when faced with the harsh reality of contact rugby? We are delighted to say none. Sure, some players took to it more readily than others. But they all got there in the end. All the kids can now make, and safely take, a tackle! Overall, though we lost a few to football our numbers increased, with 52 players on the books, 35-40 turning up week in week out.

Our coaching numbers have also swelled to 10. We now count English, Irish, Scots, Welsh and a Kiwi in the set-up! There’s a bad joke in there somewhere. As well as maintaining a high player to coach ratio it has meant that we’ve always trained at home as well as sending teams to festivals.

On the coaching front we have maintained our slightly experimental approach which has continued to get success on the field and admiration from other coaches. We have stayed in line with the RFU’s mixed ability ethos though we have welcomed a re-introduction of more competitive rugby, noting that the more experienced players were getting very bored with the total lack of competition. That said, we believe that as a coaching set-up we should be judged on how much the developing players improve. This season they have come on leaps and bounds.

Season highlights include going unbeaten at the Ealing Festival, a strong performance at the Sussex Festival, taking the decision to field 3 teams, an unbeaten two team trip to the Saracens Festival and a very strong performance at the very competitive London Irish Festival. Not forgetting an excellent tour to Bournemouth, where we fielded 3 teams, and nurtured their ever-growing friendships within our Hove rugby family. We also recently had a very well attended parents only night which is all part of cementing the age-group spirit.

We’re by no means perfect but have a lot to be proud of. It’s the result of a committed and diligent coaching set-up, a lovely set of parents and a fantastic group of players, who combine heaps of talent with a great attitude. Roll on next season.

Matt Hathaway

Under 8s:

Another enjoyable season for the U8s saw us develop the size and skills within the squad. Our player numbers grew towards 40 players with another 10 or so trialling by the end of the season. These were supported by a committed and experienced coaching team of 6, enabling every player to receive dedicated support. We successfully attended 11 festivals and joint training sessions, and during the Sussex Finals were able to field 4 full squads – making us just about the largest squad in the in our age group in the area. The focus this year has been on the defensive structure and achieving 7-tag ‘shut-out’s, utilising width through passing, and ensuing every player appreciates the TREDS values before they reach proper contact. And it was incredibly rewarding to see these elements come together in end of season Finals and Tour, where we were regularly one of the best defensive and offensive units. With more interest to join both the the coaches and players we look set for another positive season next year.

Richard Cheeseman

Under 7s:

2018-2019 was a marquee year for the U7 group. Players and coaches who have been slogging it out for 2 years at the U5/U6 level finally got to play in festivals around the county!

Our group numbers are strong. Our coaching team has grown to 8 people – which is good news because we have over 40 signed up players on the books, and weekly attendance is generally above 30. During the course of the season we attended 7 festivals. There is a clear link between player improvement and festival attendance so we aim to increase the involvement next year. Overall, we gave a very good account of ourselves at the festivals and we received frequent comments on how good the players were at support play, and how organised they all seemed.

Highlights during the year included the H-Triangular festival at Hove. We hosted Horsham and Haywards Heath. The weather was diabolical, but we still had high-tempo festival with full participation – everyone played 5 games and were gone home by 11.30. All the fun of a festival without the hanging-around. Feedback from our parents and the visitors was very positive and we’ll look to do more of these training/festivals next year.

Another highlight was of course the Bournemouth tour. We had 16 players & parents making our debut tour. Lots of fun & bonding between both parents & players, and it was great to have all the minis age groups together again.

All in all a very positive year and we look forward to the challenges of U8 next season, with plans to grown both the squad size and the number of coaches involved.

April 2019

Report 24/04/2019

This is the last weekend the club will be open, going forward the club will only be open on Thursday evenings so any activity should be planned for then. We will be starting pitch maintenance work in May on the front two pitches in May so these will be out of action over the early part of the summer.

The U15s and U16s are playing in the Sussex Cup finals on Sunday  at Crawley RFC. U15s KO at 11:00 and U16s at 12:30. It’s a great achievement for Hove youth rugby to make the finals in both the age groups that have cup competitions. I’m sure they would love some support.

There is a charity match on the afternoon in memory of Emma Shields a former player in the women’s team who passed away before Christmas. The current women’s second team will be playing a team of past players, kick off is at 2pm and we will be raising funds for Friends of Worthing Hospital, all welcome.

It is end of season fun and games for the Minis and Youth teams, and the U13s are going on tour to Kent.

Report 17/04/2019

Senior competitive rugby came to an end last week with the first team’s final game in London 1 South finishing 45 – 41 to Chobham. The women also had their last competitive game in the National Cup final against Thurrock in a closely fought match where the lead switched repeatedly with a final score of 20 – 27 to Thurrock.

The club will be closed over the Easter weekend and then the last weekend of the season is 27/28th April.

There is a charity match on the afternoon 28th April in memory of Emma Shields a former player in the women’s team who passed away before Christmas. The current women’s second team will be playing a team of past players, kick off is at 2pm and we will be raising funds for Friends of Worthing Hospital, all welcome.

Report 12/04/2019

We have an exciting fun for all the family ‘Race Night’ at the club tonight (12th April), starts at 7pm, cost £6 for adults and £3 for children raising funds for the U15 tour to Belgium.

With league rugby coming to an end there was only one senior game last weekend, the first team played London Cornish, Hove took an early lead scoring first but London Cornish  led 5 – 26 at half time. Second half saw an excellent fight back by the team with honours drawn at the end with a 33 -33 draw. The game exemplified the fighting attitude shown by the first team throughout a difficult season when they consistently put in the effort but often with little reward.

On Saturday the firsts play their last league game away at Chobham, the 2nd & 3rds are combining to play a social touring team from Sutton & Epsom

The women’s are in the National Cup final against Thurrock at Stourbridge RFC, a coach will be going with spaces available for any supporters, to book a place contact Lizzie on 07970918414 or lizzie@true-adventure.co.uk, costs £5 and will be leaving Hove at approx 9am.

Girls U11  are away at Lewes, U15 away at Worthing and U18 away at Uckfield. Boys U13 home against Haywards Heath and U16 play Alton, also at home.

The club will be closed over the Easter weekend and then the last weekend of the season is 27/28th April. Report 03/04/2019

Last weekend the first team were away at Thurrock losing 80 – 31, the third team were in cup action in the Sussex Bowl final against Ditchling, a thrilling game where we started brightly taking the lead then slipped to 41 – 18 before a sterling effort to fight back with a final result of 41 – 37, we may not have won the silverware on this occasion but is was an excellent game to watch. The previous week’s victory confirmed the thirds as winners of their league, congratulations to all the squad.

The women’s long trip to Newcastle brought rewards, they won 48 – 0 securing their place in the National Cup Final against Thurrock, thanks to all who contributed to the cost of the trip as the RFU finding did not cover the full cost of an overnight trip. The final should be an exciting game, in the league the women finished second behind Thurrock with each team winning their home match. The final is on the 14th April at Stourbridge RFC, a coach will be going with spaces available for any supporters, to book a place contact Lizzie on 07970918414 or lizzie@true-adventure.co.uk, costs £5 and will be leaving Hove at approx 9am.

Last but not least the U16 were also victorious this weekend beating Brighton 5 – 0 and in doing so winning their league as undefeated champions. Well done all of you.

On Saturday the firsts play London Cornish, the seconds were also due to play them but cornish have conceeded the game so we are looking for an alternative fixture, the third team play St Francis. There will be a lunch before the game, served at 13:30 and is beef curry with rice, onion bhajis and naans, and lemon tart or cheese. Contact Maddy on 07796147750 or Gill on 0777133188 if you would like to book a place.

On Sunday the women’s teams have a rest week, the mini’s are off on tour, the U12s play Lewes at home and the U14 are away at Haywards Heath. Girls U11 & U13 are away at Pulborough and the U18 host Old Reigatians.

March 2019

27/03/2019

A busy day at the club on Saturday with all men’s teams playing at home and a large number of Chichester fans who took advantage of being able to hop on the train over. Both the first and seconds were playing Chichester with the 1st team losing 10 – 43 and the 2nds 38 – 44. The thirds beat Littlehampton 55-10 and won their league, Harveys of Sussex Division Three West.

On Sunday the women’s second team played their last league game of the season with a draw against New Ash Green, this left them in 5th place in their league an excellent result for the team’s first season in this league.

On Saturday the third team are off to Horsham to play Ditchling in the Sussex Bowl Final, kick off is at 3pm, do come along and support the team.

The first team are on the road to Thurrock and we are still looking for a fixture for the second team. Saturday also sees the Women’s first team set off for their long trip to Newcastle to play Novocastrians. Thanks to all members who supported their fund-raising efforts to cover the cost of overnight accommodation so they don’t have to do the trip in one day.

At the club on Sunday the U12 play Bognor, the U14 play Worthing, the U15 girls are off to Horsham.

The U16 boys play Brighton away, in a Sussex Division One league decider; a win will see them undefeated Sussex champions. The game kicks off at 12:30 at Waterhall and I’m sure the boys would appreciate lots of Hove support cheering them on. I have watched them play a couple of times this season and seen some excellent rugby so well worth popping over.

Finally thank-you to all the organisers on the girls tour to Bath last weekend, this was the first time the girls section had toured out of the county. Thanks also to the coaches and parents who gave up their time to go along. From all reports the girls had a fabulous time and were praised on how polite and well behaved they were throughout the trip so excellent ambassadors for Hove

Report 22/03/2019

Quiet week for club matches last week with the end of the Six Nations meaning there were no games on Saturday, on Sunday the women’s first team lost 20 – 17 away at Litchfield and the second team lost 0 – 36 against Seaford.

Busy day at the club on Saturday with all the men’s teams at home, the first and second teams play Chichester and the third team play Littlehampton, there will be a lunch before the game, served at 13:30 and is toad in the hole with veg, followed by a choice of chocolate tart or cheese. Contact Maddy on 07796147750 or Gill on 0777133188 if you would like to book a place.

The under 15s will be holding a boot washing tour fund raiser after Saturday’s games.

Report 14/03/2019

The firsts had a tough trip away to Dartfordians on Saturday, with Dartfordians fighting to stay out of the relegation zone a physical game ended  74 – 7, the thirds lost away to Steyning 50 – 31. On Sunday some of our U15s were playing for Cardinal Newman in the semi final of the schools cup, losing 32 – 14 against Dartford Grammar School.

Congratulations to the U15 & U16 boys who have both made it through to the Sussex Trophy Finals which will be held at Crawley on 28th April.

There are no senior games at the club on Saturday as we enter the final weekend of the Six Nations, with the title still up for grabs I’m sure it will be an exciting day of rugby. We will be welcoming down an U15 touring side from Beaconsfield.

On Sunday the women’s first team head to Litchfield in for the Championship Cup, the second team play Seaford at Home.

The women are fund raising to help cover the costs of their trip to Newcastle at the end of the month, the RFU & club are providing some support but with overnight accommodation for the team and a coach for two days it is an expensive trip.

The U15 & U18 Girls are both away at Horsham and Tunbridge Wells respectively.U13 boys are away at Seaford, U14 away at Horsham and U16 home to Dorking.

The girls section are also fund raising for their first ever out of county tour next week, they will be cycling the distance to Bath on static bikes on Saturday 16th at Southwick leisure, they will be there from 2pm if you are passing by pop by and give them some support.

Report 06/03/2019

Saturday saw a thrilling match against Havant, with the first team battling hard to come up just short losing 22 – 24, they will be relegated but from the standard of play shown on Saturday the remaining opposition should not underestimate us in the last few games of the season. The seconds lost 12 – 46 against Havant 2s and the thirds lost 20 -15 away to Sussex Police.

On Sunday both women’s teams faced strong opposition, the first played Leeds Park West who finished top of their league in Championship North, in a hard fought match in poor weather conditions it was all tied at 5 – 5, the second team were away to 2nd place Cranbrook and lost 34 – 0

Thanks to Rob for letting me know that the U13A team notched up another impressive victory, beating Haywards Heath 20-5 and setting up a showdown with Chichester next week to decide the best team in Sussex this season. Good luck to them.

There are currently no games at the club on Saturday with the 1st team away at Dartfordians and the 3rd team away at Steyning and we are still looking for a friendly fixture for the 2nd team. The club will be open to show the six nations so come down and enjoy the games with your fellow club members. At this time of year there is always pressure on the club bank account so consider it a help to the club each drink you buy!

On Sunday the women’s have a well earned break before the first team face trips to Lichfield and Newcastle in their cup.

The Mini’s have the Sussex festivals, U15 Girls are away in a mini tournament against Crowborough an East Grinstead. As mentioned above the U13A are away against Chichester, U14 are home to Crawley and U16 home to Weybridge.

February 2019

Club News

The Six nations was upon us and again, the Club was full for the England v France game and the England team came up with another great game and a large victory over the French. Sadly,a visit to the west of Offah’s Dyke as met by a lucky Welsh win.

The annual Volunteers Night was held on February 8th. This is where we thank the current volunteers and try and recruit new people to volunteer over a meal, drinks and a chat.

It was great to see so many down on that Friday night to recognise the time and effort all club volunteers put in to keep the club going and provide rugby for the community.

Senior Men

The first team were agonisingly close to their first win of the season against Medway who were third in the league at that time, but secured a losing bonus point and a try bonus point finishing 29 -33. The second and third teams both secured wins away at St Francis 7 – 22 & 5 – 54.

The following week saw the team away at Camberley who are also at the top of the table. After a decent start swapping tries for the first 30 minutes to stand at 10-10 things went wrong and heads dropped.

The game finished 53-15 and this game was mathematical relegation for the team. With just 6 points from 20 games, 6 games left to play with a maximum of 5 points per game would only achieve 36 points and the 3rd from bottom club (Tottonians) already have 37. The 2s were also at Camberley and they, too, lost against Camberley 2s by 57-7. The 3s game against Sussex Police was postponed.

The final week of February saw the 1s and 2s have a rest week whilst the 3s had an away game at Burglar Bill (Burgess Hill for those not in the know). A close game with Hove 3s coming through winning by 21-22. I’m not sure which BH team this was.

Senior Women

Sunday the 10th February saw the women’s first team beat Bath 26 – 5 securing second place in the league in Championship South, this is the team’s highest ever finish and they now face a series of games against the top teams from the Championship North.

As a result of their eleveated finish in the table, the W1 team qualified for the play off games that were introduced this year. W1 hosted Barbsley and ran out 74-12 winners. The W2 team eat Lordswood by 36 points to 10.

Colts & Youth

The U16s  and  are currently unbeaten in the league with their last game against Brighton away on 3rd March and the U15 As are second in Division 1

Girls

News also from the U13 with Rob their coach letting me know the u13 As and Bs produced arguably their best performances of the season. They both won league games 35-5 against Worthing and Lewes respectively.

January 2019

Club News

The Six Nations competition started and the Club was showing all England Men and Women games. England started well with a great away victory over Ireland.

Senior Men

January saw the year start off with the traditional Hangover Trophy in aid of the Martlets Hospice and we raised £230.00 for the cause. Thanks to all who contributed. I have no details of the score but that isn’t terribly important gven the nature of the game!

The fifth of January saw the 1s have a home fixture against Cobham but went down by 58 to 24. This was followed by an away fixture against Sevenoaks where we went down by 45 to 7 and then a home game against Westcombe Park losing by 46 to 26 after being much closer during the first 70 minutes. Finally an away game at Tottonians where we went down by 40 to 26. So, still looking for that elusive first win but we are picking upsome bonus points.

The Totonians game saw Team Captain Sam Whiting return after his broken jaw and this may help the defence which has been less than watertight this season. The injury crisis worsened with back row Rob Ward out for the rest of the season with a shoulder injury that required an operation.

The seconds have won 37-35 against Shoreham and the thirds beat Steyning by 41-10. The thirds also won a cup game by 29 to 15.

Senior Women

The 1st XV travelled to Blackheath and won 10-0 reinforcing their second place in the table behind Thurrock.

Colts & Youth

The Colts were unfortunate to lose their Cup match at home against Uckfield. The final score was 15-15 and Uckfield went through because they were the away team.

Girls

The U15 team travelled for a game at Worthing and U11/U13 hostedPulborough

December 2018

Club News

It was the Minis Christmas party on 9th December and Santa had been booked well in advance to make a visit between 12 and 2.

Senior Men

December 1st saw Thurrock vist the recreation ground and, despite good play, the team went down by 0-36. 2s had no game and 3s were cancelled. The losing streak continued with the visit to London Cornish who seemed to have included Samoa in Cornwall these days. Hove with a dreaful injury crisis had to cancel the 2s game and call up bodies and went down 10-82 but kept on playing right to the end showing great spirit.

Simliar issues were evident in the final league game of 2018 when the 1s and 2s went to Brighton. The 1s were bereft of almost an entire team numerically and Director of Rugby Phil Ward had to boot up to make up the numbers. We lost by 0 to 73. The 2s fared slightly better but still went down by 19 to 52.

The thirds beat Uckfield in their first game of December which was a friendly. The league game on 8th December against St. Francis was postponed. The 15th saw them play Sussex Police in a friendly.

Senior Women

December 2nd – The 1s had a rest day and the 2s lost 0-22 to league leaders Cranbrook. The week after on the 9th the 1s travelled to Henley and came away victorious by 20 points to 10.

December 16th saw the 1s playing Cheltenham at home and winning 37 to 12.

The 2s travelled to Cranbrook and were defeated by 0 to 22 points. They had no fixture onn the 9th and the game on the 16th against New Ash Green at Hove was cancelled.

Colts and Youth

The Colts travelled to East Grinstead on Sunday 1st and went down 0-29.

Autumn Internationals – all shown at the Club on the big screen.

Senior Men

The opening game of the month saw both 1s and 2s travel to Havant where both went down. The 1s fought well and were definitely in the game but a penalty try and a fortuitous “nose on” by Havant which resulted in a try just kept us out of it. We did, however, score 4 tries and gained our first league point of the season. Lost 45-29

The 2s also went down with the score of 51-10 whilst the 3s hosted Littlehampton and continued their winning ways finishing winners at 84-14.

A break for the England vs New Zealand game an the back to league action with Dartfordians visiting. Sadly, despite just edging the score until the last minutes – the 1s went down by 22-26 – and also missed out on the try bonus point, but did get the losing BP. The 2s lost against a strong Horsham side by 3-46 whilst the 3s were cancelled. They played a friendly against the Sea Serpents and won – I wasn’t passed the score.

Finally, there was a visit to Chichester where the 1s went down by 0-22 but the 2s triumphed 5-25

Senior Women

Both Women’s teams entertained Blackheath on Sunday 4th and both ran out winners with the 1s getting a 41-0 result whilst the 2s ran out 28-25 victors. The next games were on 18/11 and both sides won. The 1s travelled to Reading Abbey and came away victorious at 14-24 whilst the 2s won 10-45 at Lordswood.

The final weekend of the month saw the 1st beating Trojans at Hove by 33-3 and the 2s, also at Hove, losing to Heathfield by 24-62

Colts and Youth

The U16 won a game against East Grinstead by 44 to 7 whilst the Colts lost to Pulborough.

Autumn 2018 – Under 9s

The Hove U9s have absolutely loved getting stuck into their first season of contact! We have 48 registered players with an average of 40 boys and girls turning up each week for training. After warming-up our 9 (yes, 9!) coaches do an amazing job of developing different core skills in coaching stations. Learning set moves is a challenge that the players relish (and which has left other teams dumbstruck)! By the time it comes to the next part of the training sessions the players are more than ready to start applying the skills learnt in a game context. Trophies are awarded every week to players who have shown personal improvement, good sportsmanship or great work on a particular practised skill.

So far this season the U9s have entered two teams into four different festivals. The aim is for all 48 players to have played in a festival by Christmas – and the coaches are on track to make this happen. The level of play has been high with fantastic teamwork shining through. Their competitive spirit must be hereditary as the standard of match report-writing by the parents has to be seen to be believed! Support from the parents on the sidelines is positive and encouraging – they really appreciate the quality of coaching that the players are accessing.

Roll on the rest of the season! (26 players have signed up for our Bournemouth tour in April which promises to be a highlight and is being eagerly anticipated by children and parents alike.)

Club News

Senior Men

Three games – 2 at home and 1 away during the month and sadly all defeats. Tottonians at home 5-28, then away to Medway for an 85-12 loss and next home to Camberley at 10-63.

The 2nd XV travelled to Beccahamian (currently 3rd in LSE3) to play a mixed 1s and 2s  in a friendly on 13/10 and lost 38-17. They also hosted Camberley and went down 7-43 and suffered two red cards (albeit one was 2 yellows).

The Colts lost at home to Sevenoaks by 7-53 in their early October fixture.

Girls

Sunday 14th October saw the first Girls’ Super Sunday at Hove with all 4 teams – U11, U13, U15 and U18 having games. The U11s was their first ever game and they recorded a win. Sadly, the U13, U15 and U18 all lost but a great day’s rugby wth around 120 Sussex girls all playing rugby at Hove today.

September 2018

Club News

Tuesday 4th September saw the Club host an Inner Warrior event for women aged 18+ and on Wednesday 5th September there was an equivalent session for Men aged 18+. Both events were successful in terms of numbers – with 23 on the Wednesday – but we need to see how many convert into new Members.

Senior Men

The first XV had gained promotion at the end of last season and so this year was always going to be a tough one. September saw us play 5 games, 3 at home and 2 away and we lost all five of them.

The 2s were also in a new league – Zoo Sports Shield Division 3 which is partly mirroring the firsts. It was , in essence, a new side as well as a new league. As part of the Playing plan which saw the Girls’ section established in year 1 and a  Women’s second team in year 2, th next phase was to reitroduce the Yeomen brand and make the second team an “all training” team with the Beef moving down to 3rds with optional training,

The Yeomen played 3 games in the month, 2 at home and 1 away and lost all three. Chobham 0-33, Brighton 17-41 were at home and Cobham away lost 45-10

The 3s had 2 games during the month both of which were away. A third game was due (at home) but was postponed. They beat Shoreham 2 away 10-66 and Littlehampton away 17-46.

Senior Women

The Women’s 1st XV had 3 games in September 2 away and 1 at home. They lost the first away to Bath 0-20, won the second 11-0 at home against Reading Abbey and they won away at Trojans 0-12.

The Women’s 2nd XV had only one game – away at Seaford where they went down 10-53

August 2018

Club News

Sadly, we have to report that two Vice Presidents passed this month. The first was Giles Stone who had an accident whilst pruning a tree and fell off the ladder. Giles was the son of Ian Stone who was an early member of the Club in the 1950s and is also a VP. Giles played for the 1s in the mid 1980s. Giles was 53 and passed on  2nd August 2018.

The second member was Gerry Woodage who was another early member of the Club. Gerry died on 13th August 2018 aged 91. Gerry was a player in the 1960s and had been a supporter thereafter. He had moved to Dorset and was suffering from eye disease which caused him great difficulty in seeing and so he wasn’t as regular a visitor to the club of late as he would have liked.

On the 15th August, the Club’s building plans were approved by BHCC Planning Committee. All we need to now is to raise the money.

In the first diagram below, it is the bottom of the two proposals that was submitted and approved.
