Playing Highlights

Sadly, no actual scores again this season – just the fixtures. I see the Easter Tournament is back on but now is a 7 a side affair. Also, a tour to Guernsey and Jersey was planned for the end of April. My fly on the wall reports:

This infamous tour to Guernsey took place in April 1979. We stayed at the Yacht Hotel in St. Peter Port overlooking the harbour.

Some of those in attendance were:

• Harry Williamson.
• Bunny Gray.
• Chris Gray.
• Robert Griffin.
• Graham French.
• Geoffrey Lyne.

The tour was noted for the voluminous consumption of Bobby’s bitter. Bunny Gray developed hallucinations and dived into the Harbour. It was low tide. I have no recollection of the rugger, which in any event took second place to the beer.

Golf on the Sunday morning is best forgotten. All a bit hazy. Gavers and Colin Lucas negotiated our way out of the unfortunate damage occasioned to the hotel during our stay. The hotel is still there………..

Club Highlights

Two of the Honorary Life Vce Presidents departed the list this year and, as usual, we can only assume they passed away.

• Dr. C.F. MacGuire

In addition, there was one new Vice President elected to the congregation and one reinstated – see below. Three of the VPs were missing from the list and also must be presumed passed away.

And the following were not on the list this year:

• Dr. J.P. Corr
• B.J. Griffith
• G.H. Harrington

Last year J.W. Carr was missing from the list but he is back this year. I note, however, that Dr. J.P. Corr was missing this year and so my bes guess is that Dr. Corr should have been removed last year but Mr. Carr was removed instead. No doubt, much to his surprise. I assume that this year has corrected the changes made in error last year.

Three non Playing changes this year:

• R. Pell-Stevens took over as Hon. Assistant Secretary from G.J.L. Gordon
• N. Dewick took over as Hon. Press Officer from P.R. Smith
• B.G. Dearson took over as Hon. Personnel Officer from J.B. Cartland

Playing changes were similarly rare with only one personnel change:

• K. Mills took over Captaincy of the 1s from P.M. Lewis
• A. Stevens took over Captaincy of the ‘A’s from M. Richardson
• M.J. Marks (who I believe had the sobriquet “Skid”) took over Captaincy of the ‘A’s from P.J. Seear
• The Beeefeaters didn’t have a Captain listed but did have a fixture list this season – so, I’ve left it as Dolly.

I note that the Catering Committee has been subsumed into the Clubhouse Administration Committee and that makes so much sense. However, the Schools Committee and the Coaching Committee are now both down to a single member and so these are ripe for some pruning attention. The Social Committee, after its nadir membership of 2, is now a 5 strong body. Not quite its zenith but a more sensible number.
