Playing Highlights

The major highlight of this season must have been the Easter Tournment which was held at Hove and we entertained teams from Holland: Eindhoven and Adelborstien; from Italy: Casale; and from France: Amandinois.

From the scan, it looks like Hove won this and I will try and get some input from people who played in this. See below i for the scan.

Club Highlights

There were 5 and possibly 6 new Vice Presidents and thus 2 or 3 departing ones. In addition, Dr. MacGuire took over the Presidency from one C.P. Lungley

  • Those joining
    • C.N. Basley
    • P.R. Cruden
    • G.H.O. Gordon
    • Dr. B.Hill
    • D.J. Lewis (but a Dr. P.C. Lewis dropped out – same person/error? If you know please let me know)
    • P.J. Trantom
  • Those departing
    • J. Andrews
    • J.B. Johnstone
    • Dr. P.C. Lewis (see above)

It looks like the Club Captain sobriquet has gone and they just retained the Captains of the XVs. Thus far, the Club Captain had always been the Captain of the 1s and so was rather extraneous. In later years (2000s/2010s) the Club Captain was reintroduced as the Players’ Representative on the Committee.

There were several changes in personnel for the roles but I’m not going to list them all as it takes time to infer from the data. Over time, we may revisit this. If you wish to do it then please send me the info and I will publish it.

This year saw the Coaching Committee incepted although chatting to people from that time, they don’t recall it amounting to much and declare that the coaching just continued as was. Bria Hill who was the Chairman of the Club at this time states “I was a little surprised to see ‘coaching committee’…for most of those early years coaching was largely run by the captain“.

This year saw 25 full members of the General Committee plus 1 co-opted member and 7 sub-commmittees totalling a further 49 people (some duplicates of course) so the Club at that time saw the need to have 75 different roles to fulfil its management needs. There were even 17 full time members of the selection committee plus the likely inclusion of all the Captains and Vice Captains which makes me surprised that they ever agreed on anythng. I can only presume that dictatorship ruled over democracy in those days.

I also note the surprising (to me) introduction of 2 females onto the Social Committee. From what I understand of the role of the SC in those days, it was no place for young laides. But, a clue is in the name of one of these – a Miss S Basley – who might just be related to one Christopher Neil Basley of this parish and you can count on your correspondent reaching out to him for a more fulsome explanation of what was going on at that time. Quite possibly Miss M. Russell was there for moral support!
