Playing Highlights
The major highlight of this season must have been the new pitch opening and the display by the Red Devils.
The game against the Aldershot Services team was in honour of the Club’s military history and the levelling of the pitch in Hove Park was a significant development for the Club.
Below, we have the programme for that game and I will try and get some memories of people who played in the game.
Mens 1st XV
The table below shows theresults for the season for the 1st XV. Over time I will try to capture lower XVs but it is a long job – so any help appreciated.
This year, mostly, we got real scores not just an indication of W/L/D for most, if not all, of the games.

Club Highlights
You are spending hour after hour, and day after day reading handbooks and seeing the same old names and cursing the need for all those initials and the changes in personnel for no obvious reason – then you see something different your heart leaps as you can now write something slightly different and attempt to keep your sanity.
So, without further ado – this year the Club separated the Trustees out of the main VP List and positioned them at the top – just behind the HLVPs. Also, this year 2 of the trustees seem to have stood down but 3 more have joined the ranks taking the total back to 4. I’m sure that you will be as excited as me at such news! The trustees now include:
- A.J. Coe
- D. Hunnisett
- J.W.I. Jenkin
- J. Shelton
W./Cdr. J Lawson C.B.E., R.A.F. was elected as an Honorary Life Vice President joining that exclusive Club with only 2 other current members.
Additionally, four new Vice Presidents were elected to the congregation:
- J. Andrews
- R. Chruszczewski (aka Bob the Pole)
- J.A. Coe (who, I’m sure must be the A.J. Coe who is a trustee)
- R. Ramage
Four VP’s were missing from last year.
- R.A. Edwards
- R.C. Edwards
- G.E. Heath
- E.V.A. Scorer
The Officers and men had 1 Non Playing change and 7 Playing Changes:
- After a year’s break, W.P.L. Thomas took back the reins of Press Officer from J.E. Parkinson
- Richard Lewis took over as Club Captain, 1st XV Captain and Team Secretary from Richard Jenkins
- J.R. Bonner took over from I. Greive as Captain and Team Secretary of the ‘A’ XV
- Colin Lucas replaced J.W.G. Gould as Captain and Team Secretary of the of the Yeomen
- Graham Gordon replaced Colin Lucas as Captain and Team Secretary of the Beefeater XV
- All the Vice Captain saw changes:
- 1st XV Graham French from P. Seear
- ‘A’ XV D.J. Bonner from R.D. Cahill
- Yeomen XV J. Ingham from A.McCoy
- Beefeater XV R.M.F. Singleton from J. McCormack
- And in the ‘B’s P.J. Bonner from A.D. Hawkey
- On the Committee front, we saw the return of the Schools committee after an absence of 4 or 5 years
We also see the inception of the new Development Committee – which now I know was incepted to manage the move from teh old “Scout Hut” to the new Clubhouse in Hove Park which was known as the “New Pavilion”. This committee was set up to manage the planning, fund raising and works in order to facilitate the building and the move.
I remember a story somewhere about the bar at the “New Pavilion” being the counter from Barclays Bank in Hove. If I can dig that out I will reproduce it in the 1976-1977 season page when we actually moved.
In this year though (ad there is the programme above) the old sloping pitch was replaced with a new one and a special game was organised.
