Playing Highlights

The table below shows theresults for the season for the 1st xv. Over time I will try to capture lower XVs but it is a long job – so any help appreciated. I make the following comments:

  • Playing friendlies and doing your own fixtures seems to allow you to do a lot more home games.
  • Games still played on 24/12, 26/12, 31/12 as well as Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Monday – so no Christmas or Easter shutdown
  • I notice a couple of extra “olds” this year and one caused me a smile as I read Old Shootershillians as Old Shooter Shillians but then realised it was probably Old Shooters Hillians. Stupid name in any case 🙂
  • Hove attended the Sussex 7s and I’m trying to read George’s handwriting but I do actually think we won it. I have no idea where it was held but as far as I can make out from his notes the following is true:
    • beat someone (can’t decipher) in first game by 19-0
    • then beat Worthing 11-0
    • Someone else 9-5
    • Someone else 6-5
    • beat Crowborough 21-0
    • beat Horsham 6-3
    • Then won the final against Old Somebodians 19-0 (might have been Old Reigatian)

Below we have scans of the menu for the Club Ball. It seems to have been customary to get signatures of the guests – at least that’s what George Fawcett used to do – as this was his menu copy. This year the ball was set in honour of Jon Boreham who was one of the founder members of the Club.

The first XV names are given as: Stood: V.Terry, S. Savery, (D Hughes), R. Winstone, D. Elmes, J. Hudson, B. Cager, J. McMaramara; Seated: P. Trantom, G. Fawcett, T. Scroby (Captain), P. King, R. Davis, S. Clarke, D. Sherwood.

The “A” XV names are given as: I. Brims, P. Thomas, A. Cahill, D. Pye, T. Mortimer (R.Lee), F. Wilkinson, C.Pope, I. Stone, S. Valliams, E. Perry, T. Sereby, R. Burrage, M. Kane

The Worthing Sevens team was: John Hudson, Vic Terry, John McMaramara, George Fawcett, Mike Miller, Nibs Davis, David Sherwood and the cabaret artistes were: Pete(?) Thomas, Bob the Pole, Roger Burridge, Ian Stone, George Fawcett, Peter McCloud, John Lyon-Maris
