Playing Highlights

The table below shows the fixtures/results for the 1st XV. Over time I will try to capture lower XVs but it is a long job – so any help appreciated. I make the following comments:

  • 27 games payed but 6 cancelled. 33 games per season is a big ask.
  • Clearly we were playing stronger opposition most of the time but a Boxing Day win over Brighton of 65-0 must have warmed the hearts
  • Games were played on 24/12, 26/12, 31/12 as well as Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Monday – so no Christmas or Easter shutdown
  • Some of the Clubs we played are now in the Premiership – Harlequins and Saracens
  • And some Clubs are no more – some merged, some maybe closed their doors. Old Azurians – merged with Worthing?

Club Highlights

We are missing last year’s (1954-1955) handbook and so inferring data by comparing the Club handbooks for the years isn’t possible. If anyone has this missing gem then please do get in touch with Andy Ward

I should perhaps add – for no good reason – that this was the year young Wardy first popped his head out (literally) into the world in August 1955. So, it is quite strange seeing all these things in a book that was quite possibly printed on the day of my birth.

As a consequence of the above, I can’t do any comparison with previous years to document comings and goings but it is perhaps worth making the following points – considering the club was just about to start its 4th year of existence:

  • In addition to the President, the Club had 25 Vice Presidents which included 4 Trustees
  • The Club was fielding 2 teams
  • The Club already had Schools’ Liaison – not sure how active though
  • Both the Secretary and the Treasure had assistants – something that is really needed today but not forthcoming
  • As well as the ruling General Committee – there were a total of 5 sub-committees
  • A total of 17 people were active on those 6 committees and a total of 16 were listed as officers
